Beginning with a breakdown of the structure, inhabitants, and behaviours of the Astral Plane, and using references from Hindu and Buddhist myths and beliefs, Leadbeater gives a guided tour of the various planes of the universe. With creatures such as black magicians, vampires, werewolves, elemental essences, fairies, and angels, and phenomena including churchyard ghosts, mysterious bell ringing, clairvoyance, second sight, spirit photographs, slate writing, and levitation.
